1. According to Hochshild, the “Second Shift,” begins when Nancy comes home. She makes dinner, and takes care of her son Joey. She feeds him, bathes him, then needs to put him to sleep. In the middle of doing all of this, she is also doing laundry. All of these little things add up to a lot, which makes it her “Second Shift.”
2. The "myth" created by the Holts is when one is upstairs, and the other is downstairs. This is basically a separation for both Nancy and Evan to deal with their “problems,” of the unequaled household work. Evan would go down stairs, where there is a garage, their car, and of course, Evans tools. Upstairs, is where Nancy would spend all of her time with Joey. This is where the kitchen, dining room, and bathroom is located. Where Nancy does “most” of the household work. Though Nancy is doing most of the work, the “myth” or division between the two of them, is a quick way to get away from each other.
3. According to Hochschild, the purpose of family myths is to settle any previous arguments between couples who are married or living together. A prime example of this, is when Evan goes downstairs, and Nancy stays upstairs. The main purpose of the myth is to seperate from the other person, and basically pretend as if nothing wrong, or ignore the main problem.
4. When I get married, I plan of already having a job as well as my husband. The two of us, would be working full time, and we will b married for a good three years before having children. I would hope to divide the housework evenly between the two of us. Make dinner together, yard work together, and the inside chores together. Once we have children, I plan on staying home, or working part time, while my husband still works fulltime. I don’t plan on sending my child to daycare, unless we are in dire need of money. In that case, id have to work fulltime and send them there. If we do have enough money, and I don’t need to work, I paln on staying home with my child until they are old enough to go to kindergarten, Once they can be in school full time, I will go back to work, and work fulltime.
